Chant Down Sound
Melbourne’s Chant Down Sound formed in 2000 when radio presenter Jesse I linked with longtime reggae selector Ras Crucial. They play contemporary Jamaican sound style, mixing the freshest Jamaican reggae and dancehall together with vintage classics, custom-made dubplate specials, and live MCing.
Chant Down were a part of the first ever Australian soundclash back in October 2000, when they took on Sydney’s Nasty Tek at Revolver in Melbourne. Soundclash is a musical contest where crew members from opposing sound systems pit their skills against each other, they have clashed with crews all over the country.
Chant Down’s monthly More Fire night is the longest running reggae session in Australia since April 2001. They have hosted international artists including Third World, Lucky Dube, The Gladiators, Jr Reid, Michael Rose, Chaka Demus & Pliers, Jah Mason, and Gappy Ranks; performed countless gigs and festivals in Melbourne, interstate, and abroad; and played support for acts including Chronixx, Lee Scratch Perry, Big Youth, Luciano, Horace Andy, Demarco, Anthony B, Elephant Man, Johnny Osbourne, and many more.
The result is a vibrant mix of all authentic reggae styles, from the original deep roots through to cutting edge bashment – all delivered with live energy and proper dancehall vibes!
